The Doubling Rule

Every person has exactly two biological parents. That single fact generates the entire ancestor math: each generation back, the number of ancestor slots doubles. In formula terms, generation n holds 2ⁿ slots — 2¹ = 2 parents, 2² = 4 grandparents, 2³ = 8 great-grandparents.
