A grandparent test can be extremely accurate — but unlike a paternity test, its accuracy is not fixed by the laboratory. It is decided by who agrees to give a sample. How accurate is it, really?

With both paternal grandparents and the child's mother tested, an accredited laboratory can usually reach a probability of grandparentage above 99%. With a single grandparent and no mother, results are much softer and a meaningful share come back inconclusive.

Accuracy here means statistical confidence, not a yes or no. The laboratory calculates how much more likely your DNA pattern is if the alleged grandparents are the true grandparents than if they are unrelated. That ratio becomes the probability on the report.

Exclusions are far more definitive than inclusions. If the tested grandparents cannot be the child's grandparents, the data usually shows it plainly. Proving that they are takes more information.

The laboratory's own error rate is not the limiting factor. Modern relationship testing is technically reliable; the uncertainty comes from the biology of inheritance, not from the equipment.

Why does one grandparent give a weaker answer than two?

Because a single grandparent shares only about a quarter of a grandchild's DNA, and that quarter is drawn at random.

Each grandparent contributes roughly 25% on average. But the actual figure varies from person to person, and there is no way to know in advance whether a particular pair sits at the high or low end.

Why does the child's mother matter?

Because half of the child's DNA is hers, and every piece of it the laboratory can identify is a piece it can set aside.

Her sample removes the noise. Once her contribution is subtracted, whatever remains must have come from the biological father — and that remainder is what gets compared with the alleged grandparents.

It routinely turns a borderline case into a clear one. Laboratories describe tests without the mother as "motherless" for exactly this reason, and the achievable probability is noticeably lower.

What do the probability numbers actually mean?

They are likelihood statements, and they deserve to be read carefully.

A 99.9% probability of grandparentage means the DNA pattern is overwhelmingly more consistent with the alleged relationship than with the tested people being unrelated.

A figure in the 90s is suggestive, not settled. Many courts and agencies expect a threshold — often 99% or higher — before a result carries weight, so a 94% report may not be usable even though it leans clearly one way.

"Inconclusive" is a real outcome, not a failure. It means the data cannot distinguish between the possibilities with the samples provided. The fix is more participants, not a different laboratory.

The comparison is against "unrelated", not against "some other relative". This is the subtlety most reports do not spell out. A high probability of grandparentage does not by itself rule out that the tested person is a different close relative of the true father.

When is a different test the better choice?

How do grandparents show up in a consumer ancestry test?

Clearly, if both people have tested at the same company — but under a label that covers several relationships at once.

Age usually breaks the tie. A 40-year gap points strongly at a grandparent rather than a half-sibling, though it does not prove it.

Shared matches finish the job. A true grandparent will match everyone on that side of the family at appropriate levels, and the pattern of who else they match is usually more decisive than the number itself.

What changes between a home kit and a legal test?

The science barely changes. Everything around it does.

Chain of custody is the whole difference. For legal use, samples are collected by a neutral third party who checks identification, and every transfer is documented. That is what makes a report admissible.

Home relationship kits use the same laboratory analysis. They simply cannot verify who spat in the tube, so the report says "for information only" or similar wording.

Accreditation matters. Look for a laboratory accredited for relationship testing by a recognized body, and confirm that whoever needs the result will accept that accreditation before you pay.

Costs differ substantially. A legal grandparentage test with several participants costs many times a consumer ancestry kit. Ask for the price with all participants included, not per person, and ask what happens if the result is inconclusive.

What can make a result inconclusive?

Several ordinary things, and none of them mean anyone did anything wrong.

Too few participants. One grandparent, no mother, is the classic setup for an unusable report.

A close-relative alternative. If the true father might have been a brother or another son of the same grandparents, a grandparent test cannot distinguish between them, because both men have the same parents.

Unusually low random sharing. Two people can genuinely be grandparent and grandchild while sharing at the low end of the range, which weakens the statistics.
