Step 2: Read Your Match List Properly
When results land, resist the urge to message everyone. Spend the first session just understanding what you're looking at.
Sort your matches by shared cM, highest first. Write down the top 20 with their cM totals, their usernames, whether they have a tree, and how many people are in it. This list is your entire case file for the next few weeks.

Step 3: Cluster Your Matches Into Family Lines
Clustering is the technique that turns a chaotic match list into something you can actually work with. The principle: relatives who share DNA with each other as well as with you probably belong to the same branch of your family.
The Leeds Method
The Leeds Method is a spreadsheet exercise that takes an afternoon and needs no special software. You list your matches in the roughly 90–400 cM range down one side, then use each one's "shared matches" list to assign colors. Matches that share with each other get the same color.
Most people end up with four color groups, which usually correspond to the four grandparent lines. For a parent search, two of those groups will be your unknown parent's paternal and maternal lines — and now you know which matches belong together.
AutoClusters and other tools

Looking for convergence
Build trees for three or four matches in the same cluster and watch for a couple who appears in all of them. That couple is your common ancestral couple on that line. Do it again for the other cluster and you'll have a second couple.
Now the geometry does the work. Your unknown parent descends from both couples — so you're looking for a person whose ancestry includes couple A on one side and couple B on the other. Build the descendants of both couples forward and look for a marriage that joins the lines. The children of that marriage are your candidate list.

- Age. Who was of an age to be a parent at your birth?

Step 5: Get Free Help — You Don't Have To Do This Alone
There's an established volunteer infrastructure for exactly this, and it's genuinely free.

- State adoption registries and reunion registries. Many states operate mutual-consent registries where both parties can register and be matched. Two things to know before you post: these groups will ask for your cM figures and match structure, not your personal story, and they'll expect you to have done the basics (tested, uploaded, clustered). Come prepared and you'll get help fast.
What Makes Some Searches Harder
Not every case behaves the way the timelines suggest, and it helps to know in advance whether yours has a complication.
Endogamy. In populations where families intermarried over generations — Ashkenazi Jewish, Acadian, Puerto Rican, Low German Mennonite, and many island and isolated communities among them — everyone shares more DNA with everyone else. A match reported as a second cousin might genuinely be a fourth cousin twice over. Shared cM figures inflate, ranges stop meaning what the charts say, and clustering produces one giant blob instead of four neat groups. Searches in endogamous populations take longer and lean much harder on documented records. Say so up front when you ask for help, because the approach changes.
Underrepresented groups in the databases. Consumer testing skews heavily toward people with European ancestry in the US and UK. If your unknown parent's family is from a region with fewer testers, your closest match may simply be more distant than average through no fault of your method.
Recent immigration. If the line you're chasing arrived within the last two or three generations, the records you need may be overseas, in another language, and not digitised. That's a research problem rather than a DNA problem, but it adds time.

Be certain first

Think about who else is affected
A birth parent may have a spouse who doesn't know. There may be siblings who've never been told. There may be a reason for the original secrecy that's still painful. None of that means you shouldn't reach out — it means the first message should be a door, not a demand.
Write a short, calm first message
A good opening message is:
- Short. A few sentences. Not your life story.
- Specific but gentle. "DNA testing suggests we're closely related and I'm hoping to understand my family background."

- Private. Direct message or letter, never a public post, never through a third party who might tell others first.

If the answer is no
