What Is an Ethnicity Estimate, Actually?

It's a statistical comparison, not a reading of some ancestral label written into your cells.

Here's the process every company follows in some form. They assemble a reference panel: DNA from present-day volunteers who can document that all of their recent ancestors came from one particular place — say, four grandparents all born within the same region. Those samples define what "typical DNA from that region" looks like as a statistical pattern.

Then they take your DNA, chop it into segments, and for each segment ask which reference population's pattern it most resembles. Add up the answers and you get percentages.

The three things that follow from that

More samples means sharper boundaries. When a company only had a few hundred samples from all of Europe, "Western Europe" was one big fuzzy blob and your DNA got assigned to it broadly. Does a Change Mean the First Result Was Wrong?

The first result was a best estimate given the reference data available at the time. The new result is a best estimate given better data. Both were honest attempts at the same question; the second one has more to work with.

What is fair to say is that the interface oversold the first result. A number printed as "26%" with no visible error bar reads like a measurement. Why Do My Siblings Have Different Ethnicity Estimates?

Because you didn't inherit the same DNA.

You get half your DNA from each parent, but which half is randomly determined. During the formation of eggs and sperm, chromosomes swap sections in a process called recombination, so every child receives a differently shuffled deck.

Full siblings share roughly 50% of their DNA on average — which also means they differ in roughly 50% of it. If your mother's ancestry was a mix, one child can inherit noticeably more of one strand of it than another child did.

How big can the difference be?

What Do the Regions Actually Mean?

This is the part that causes the most heartache, so it's worth being blunt.

Regions are geography, not nationality. A region label describes a genetic cluster that corresponds roughly to a geographical area in recent centuries. It says nothing about citizenship, passports, national identity, or belonging.

Borders are modern and they move. The lines on today's map are political decisions, many of them made within the last century or two. People and their DNA moved across those areas for thousands of years without regard for lines that didn't exist yet. Companies group people by genetic similarity, and populations on either side of a modern border are frequently near-identical genetically.

Screenshot every version. Companies overwrite your old results when they update. If you like having the history, save an image each time — nobody does this and everybody wishes they had.

Read the ranges, not the headline number. Where a company gives you a possible range, that range is the result. The single number is a convenience.

Move the confidence slider if you have one. Watching regions appear and vanish as you change the threshold teaches more about how these estimates work than any article can.

Use the big signals as research leads. A substantial unexpected region is worth investigating in records. A 1% sliver is not.

Cross-check with your match list. If a region is real and recent, you'll usually see matches with trees pointing at that area. Matches corroborate; percentages suggest.
