The Indian figures are the least reliable on this table. India has no single national surname index, surname use varies enormously by region and community, and Devi and Kumar function partly as honorific suffixes rather than family names.
The Chinese figures are the most reliable, because household registration is comprehensive and the surname pool is small enough to count.
Notice the gap between rank 5 and rank 11. Chen alone outnumbers every Smith on earth by roughly fifteen to one. Western surname lists routinely present Smith as "one of the world's most common names", which is true only inside a very small frame.
Why Chinese surnames dominate: a tiny original pool
The single biggest reason the global distribution looks the way it does.
China has roughly 6,000 surnames in use, but about 100 of them cover the great majority of the population. The top three alone account for something in the region of 20%.
The pool was small from the beginning. Chinese surnames descend from ancient clan names, ancestral state names and noble titles from the Zhou period and earlier — a few thousand at most, and many died out.
A famous primer fixed the canon. The Hundred Family Surnames, a rhyming text compiled in the tenth century, listed around 500 names and was memorized by schoolchildren for a millennium, reinforcing the concentration.
Surnames spread downwards from the elite. Commoners adopted the surnames of ruling houses and local lords, which multiplied the already-common names rather than creating new ones.
No new surnames were coined. Unlike Europe, where a new occupational or locative name could appear in any village at any time between 1100 and 1500, China's pool was closed.
Political pressure narrowed it further. Non-Han populations were repeatedly required or encouraged to adopt Han surnames, and the ones they adopted were the familiar ones.
Nguyen and Kim: imposed and adopted naming
Two of the most extreme concentrations on earth, and both have a documented mechanism.
Nguyen is carried by something close to 40% of Vietnam's population. No other country has a single surname anywhere near that share.
The cause is dynastic. Vietnamese families repeatedly adopted the reigning dynasty's surname — for safety, for advancement, or under pressure after a change of regime. Successive shifts from the Lý to the Trần to the Nguyễn concentrated the name each time.
Loyalty and survival both pushed the same way. Taking the ruling house's name signalled allegiance; after the Nguyễn came to power in 1802, it also protected families associated with the previous order.
Korea's concentration has a different route. Kim covers roughly 21% of South Korea, Lee about 15%, and Park about 8% — three names for nearly half the country.
Korean surnames were originally aristocratic. They came with clan seats attached, and commoners were largely without them until the nineteenth century.
When commoners took surnames, they took prestigious ones. After the abolition of the class system in 1894 and the household registration reforms that followed, families registering for the first time chose the names of the great clans. Sharing the surname Kim, even with the same clan seat, is not evidence of shared descent.
Patronymic freezing: the European version of the same problem
Europe's concentrated surnames nearly all come from one mechanism, described in full in patronymic surnames.
In a live patronymic system the name changes every generation. Jens Hansen's son is Peder Jensen; Peder's son is Lars Pedersen. Nothing is inherited.
When the system froze, whatever name a man happened to carry became permanent for all his descendants. The freeze happened at a single moment in each country, by law or by administrative habit.
The given-name pool at that moment decides the outcome. If ninety per cent of men were called Hans, Jens, Peder, Lars, Nils or Anders, the resulting surname pool is six names deep.
Denmark is the textbook case. The 1828 and 1856 ordinances froze patronymics, and Denmark ended up with Nielsen, Jensen, Hansen, Pedersen, Andersen, Christensen and Larsen covering an extraordinary share of the country.
Wales froze late from a pool narrowed by the Reformation. Jones, Williams, Davies, Evans, Thomas and Roberts dominate because the freeze happened when Biblical and Norman given names had crowded out the older Welsh stock.
Iceland never froze at all, which is why Icelandic phone directories are alphabetised by first name — there are no hereditary surnames to sort by.
Occupational convergence: the smith effect
The other great flattener, and the reason the same job tops so many separate countries.
Every settlement of any size had a blacksmith. The trade was essential, singular, and highly visible, so the byname "the smith" was coined independently in tens of thousands of villages.
None of those families were related. This is the purest example of multiple independent origin, and it is why Smith cannot be traced to a single source.
The same name tops country after country in translation. Smith in England, Scotland, the United States, Canada and Australia; Schmidt in Germany; Kovács in Hungary; Kowalski and Kowalczyk in Poland; Kuznetsov in Russia; Ferrari and Ferraro in Italy; Herrero and Herrera in Spanish; Haddad in Arabic; Le Goff in Brittany; MacGowan and Gough in the Gaelic and Welsh traditions.
Millers, tailors and bakers repeat the pattern one tier down: Müller, Molnár and Melnikov; Schneider, Szabó and Krawczyk; Baker, Bäcker and Piekarski.
Farmer and peasant names behave the same way. Bauer in Germany, Meyer for a tenant farmer or steward, Nowak in Poland for a newcomer.

Turkey's list is unusual because it is so recent. The Surname Law of 1934 required every citizen to adopt a family name, and people chose deliberately — Yılmaz means "undaunted", Demir means "iron", Şahin means "falcon". A whole national surname stock invented within a few years.
Esposito in Italy has a grim origin. It was given to foundlings — "exposed", left at a hospital — which is why it is so common in Naples specifically.
Papadopoulos is "son of the priest", which is not scandalous: Orthodox parish priests marry, and the profession ran in families.

What a common surname does and does not tell you
The practical consequences for your own research.
A common surname is a research handicap, not a heritage. Every search returns hundreds of candidates, and distinguishing your line requires other evidence — a place, an occupation, a distinctive given name.
Sharing a common surname with someone is almost meaningless. Multiple independent origins mean thousands of unrelated families carry every frequent name in Europe and Asia.
A rare surname is a research gift. It usually has a single origin, and a historical distribution map will often point to one district — the technique is set out in what country is my last name from.
Frequency changes over time and moves with populations. García and Rodríguez entered the United States top ten within living memory, reflecting migration rather than any change in the names themselves.
Everyone alive is related eventually. Common ancestry across humanity is a mathematical certainty on a few-thousand-year timescale, as set out in we're all cousins — but that is a statement about deep time, not about your namesake in the next town.

Where the original pool was small and closed, as in China, a handful of names swallowed a civilisation. Where a patronymic system froze at a bad moment, as in Denmark and Wales, six or seven names captured a country. Where a state ordered everyone to choose at once, as in Turkey in 1934, an entire national stock appeared in a few years. And where the same essential trade existed in every village, the same name was coined thousands of times independently.
